The Campaign to Restore Democracy in
Pakistan (CRDP) is an international effort to ensure
representative political participation on part of all
segments of civil society in Pakistan. General Pervez
Musharraf's government, like all other prolonged periods
of provisional military governments in Pakistan, has
endangered the lives, livelihood, and civil liberties
of judges, lawyers, students, women, and other civilians.
The unwarranted dismissal of judges, suspension of the
constitution, and declaration of a state of emergency
on November 3rd by the Musharraf government has particularly
heightened a situation rife with cases of forced disappearances,
police brutality, torture, mass illegal arrests, and
other violations of the rule of law.
CDRP's goals and strategies will be determined at the
direction of its steering-committee which is composed
of lawyers, judges, political activists, and other singularly
embattled groups in Pakistan together with their counterparts
in the United States and the United Kingdom.
With consultation from the Human Rights Commission
of Pakistan, the British Human Rights Committee of England
and Wales, and members of the American Bar Association,
the campaign has issued the following list of priorities
in its demand that General Musharraf give up his post
as army chief immediately and act within the law and
Constitution to effect the following:
|
|
a. release of all judges, political and
human rights activists;
b. lifting all curbs on media;
c. restoration of all judges of the superior courts
to pre-PCO state;
d. revival of the constitution and recognition of its
supremacy;
e. reinstatement of unconstitutionally removed judges
and recognition
of the sanctity of the judicial procedure;
f. establishment of an independent election commission
under a
caretaker government formed with the consensus of major
political
parties.
We invite you to partner with us in this effort so
we can coordinate and supplement our advocacy and lobbying
in activities in Pakistan, the United States, and the
United Kingdom.
Sincerely,
